For more than two centuries, the estate was owned by the Chatonnet family and their heirs. Their efforts brought Magdelaine, at the end of the nineteenth century, to the very first rank of Saint-Emilion, just behind Ausone and Belair. The estate then experienced difficulties and was bought in 1952 by the Etablissements Jean-Pierre Moueix. A sustained effort was then made over the long term to replant the vines decimated by diseases and then frost. Regaining its rank, the cru was then classified as Premier Grand Cru in 1958. The property is now managed by Christian Moueix.
