Legend has it that King Henri IV, mounted on a white horse, passed by the outskirts of Saint Emilion and Pomerol in what was then an inn, which was named the Auberge du Cheval Blanc after the royal passage.

The domaine of Cheval Blanc is located on the boundary of Pomerol, therefore the soil of the vineyard has an important proportion of gravel and quaternary alluvium sediments. The vines of Cheval Blanc are cabernet franc and merlot, which is quite rare for Saint-Emillon.
