In 1715, Jean Martell, a young merchant from the island of Jersey, created his business trading in brandies in Cognac, on the banks of the Charente, and thus founded one of the very first cognac houses exporting in 1720 to Europe.

Martell developed his own distillation method using traditional Charentais copper stills, the distillation uses a technique and know-how transmitted since the time of Jean Martell.
